If you have watched the first episode of “Legion”, then you’ll know what I mean when I ask: Who is the Devil with the Yellow Eyes? There are a few different theories out there, but it’s hard to theorize when it hasn’t been made clear in what universe this series takes place. If it’s part of the film universe, it could be anything really. I’m going to run under the assumption that it’s in its own universe. I also just want to say that there will be SPOILERS for the first episode. Continue reading at your own risk.

In the premiere episode, we find out that there is this figure David sees throughout the episode. It’s an obese man with yellow-colored eyes. Is this the cause of David’s psychosis? Is he really crazy or is someone manipulating him? Is this influenced by the comics? Well. I think I have the answer. First, a bit of comics history. Legion was introduced in “New Mutants” #25. He joined “X-Factor” in 1991, which had a crossover with the main “Uncanny X-Men” series called “Muir Island Saga”. Without getting into the deep cuts, Legion was catatonic. After waking up, he was possessed by a powerful telepath who forced him to attack the X-Men. This telepath was The Shadow King, aka Amahl Farouk and created by Chris Claremont and John Byrne.

The Shadow King could very well be the Devil with the Yellow Eyes. Whenever the Devil with the Yellow Eyes shows up, David becomes disorientated and becomes unaware of reality. Shadow King does use the astral plane with his abilities. Maybe in this universe, the astral plane manifests itself as Hell. I’m also hoping it’s him because it would be interesting to see members of this new mutant team possessed or even have them face off against a possessed David. The Shadow King is also normally portrayed as a bald, obese man, except for his appearance in “X-Men: The Animated Series” of the 90s.

Is any of this confirmation that the Devil with the Yellow Eyes is Shadow King? Not at all. It could be an original character for the show or someone completely different. This is purely my speculation of who the character could be as it relates to the comics. We really don’t have much to work with and the show hasn’t shown how faithful to the comics it is. We’ll have to keep watching to find out what happens. Who do you think the Devil with the Yellow Eyes is? Also, please check out my review of the first episode and check back every Thursday for my review of that week’s episode.
